Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that WhatsApp now boasts over 3 billion monthly users. He made the announcement during Meta’s Q1 results conference call on Wednesday.
In addition, WhatsApp's business platform (WhatsApp Business) has been a key contributor to Meta’s $510 million revenue from its suite of apps, TechCrunch reported.
Despite its growing presence globally, Zuckerberg acknowledged the challenge WhatsApp faces in the US market, where many users still favour their default messaging apps. “We hope to become the leader over time [in the US messaging market], but we’re in a different position there than we are in most of the rest of the world on WhatsApp,” he said.
WhatsApp continues to see the strongest Meta AI usage across the company’s family of apps, said Meta CFO Susan Li, particularly through one-on-one chats. “We see people engage with Meta AI from several different entry points,” she noted.
ET recently reported that in order to bolster its position, Meta has introduced a standalone AI app, aimed at driving the adoption of its AI products, particularly in regions such as the US, where WhatsApp isn’t as dominant.
This new app, which is built on Meta’s latest Llama 4 language model, offers users the opportunity to interact with Meta's AI assistant via both voice and text. Previously available across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, the assistant is now centralised in this app, marking an early step towards more personalised and context-aware user interactions.
