Before Bollywood embraced Aamir Khan as its chocolate boy hero, he was already living a secret life as a married man. In 1986, two years ahead of his breakout role, Aamir secretly exchanged wedding vows with Reena Datta. Their love story didn’t begin on film sets but rather across the narrow divide of neighboring windows.

They would steal glances, speak with their eyes, and silently build a connection few understood. One day, Aamir mustered the courage to speak his heart — only to be turned down multiple times. Reena wasn’t one to be easily won over. But as time passed, she too found herself drawn to him, and eventually, she confessed her feelings.

Their wedding was a quiet affair — so quiet, in fact, that even their families were kept in the dark. They tied the knot away from the limelight and public eye, fully aware that a budding acting career and an early marriage wouldn’t mix well under public scrutiny.

When Aamir finally made his film debut in 1988 with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, opposite Juhi Chawla under Mansoor Khan’s direction, not a soul on set knew he was a married man. Shehzad Khan, one of Aamir's co-stars in the film, recently recalled the secrecy that cloaked the couple’s union. In an interview with Bollywood Thikana, Shehzad shared, “We only heard about Aamir’s marriage through whispers. They registered their marriage for just ₹50. I was meant to be a witness, but, as usual, I was late — by then, they had gone their separate ways home after getting married.”

Reena maintained a low profile throughout Aamir’s early career. She briefly appeared in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak during the now-iconic song “Papa Kehte Hain Bada Naam Karega,” sharing a brief but heartfelt screen moment with her real-life husband. Still, no one on set had the faintest idea that the young couple was already legally bound in matrimony.

Their journey as husband and wife lasted 16 years. Together, they raised two children: Junaid and Ira. Their marriage ended in 2002, shortly after the release of Lagaan, a film Reena had helped Aamir produce.

Three years later, Aamir married Kiran Rao, a creative partner he met during the making of Lagaan. Their bond, too, ended in 2021 after 15 years of marriage. Aamir and Kiran share a son, Azad.
