New Delhi: When women plan to travel somewhere, they first check the time of their periods. Now suppose you are planning to travel somewhere and suddenly your periods arrive. Obviously the plan gets ruined. Women do not go to temples during periods. Women are often very scared of going to the beach or swimming during periods. Now the question is whether women should swim during periods or not?

It’s a common myth that swimming in the ocean during your period attracts sharks. In fact, there’s no evidence of this. According to the International Shark Attack File, you can safely go scuba diving while you’re menstruating. Mary Levin, founder and executive director of The Shark Research Institute, says she hasn’t had any problems. “I’ve been diving for decades and even when I went in the water with the Hammerhead team, I had my period,” she said, adding that sharks have no interest in whether or not you’re on your period.

Swimming during periods is unhealthy

It is common to worry about hygiene during periods. Swimming pools contain chlorine. Chlorine prevents bacteria and other germs from growing. But periods can cause some discomfort.

Risk of infection

According to a research, swimming during periods increases the risk of infection. Due to this, one should avoid diarrhea, vomiting, flu-like symptoms and cough or going to crowded places as it can cause respiratory problems. Staying in water for a long time during periods also increases the risk of itching, burning and infections like yeast. You can swim but should not swim for too long.

can you use tampons

When you are on your period and want to go swimming, tampons are a great option. Be sure to insert the tampon before you get in the water so that it can absorb the menstrual blood instead of the water. When you get out of the water, change the tampon for comfort and hygiene as sometimes the tampon can absorb some pool or ocean water. For many people, using a tampon may not be an option.
