New Delhi: At a time when two countries are at war, many in the national capital and even in Kolkata are struggling with a strain of viral infection. Currently, two types of viral strains are causing symptoms like fever and respiratory issues, including cough and cold. These infections are more prevalent due to the ongoing influenza and swine flu outbreaks. Another group of patients, mainly children, are experiencing high fever along with diarrhoea, which is linked to the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Initial signs of RSV are similar to mild cold symptoms, including sneezing, runny nose, fever, cough and a decrease in one’s appetite.
In an interaction with New9Live, Dr Joydeep Ghosh, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital Anandapur, spoke about the symptoms, causes and preventive measures for the ongoing viral strain.
Over the past few weeks in Kolkata, we have observed that patients with RSV have been recovering after experiencing fever and diarrhoea for two to three days. Thankfully, the number of cases is now decreasing. Initial treatment for viral fever involves drinking plenty of water, using ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution), taking paracetamol to control fever, and inhaling steam to soothe a sore throat. ORS should be given to both children and adults who are suffering from diarrhoea. In the past two weeks, there has been a noticeable increase in typhoid fever cases in Kolkata, although the number of RSV infections remains comparatively higher. Health officials have urged the public to maintain hygiene, ensure safe drinking water, and seek timely medical attention to prevent further spread of these infections.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) can lead to severe respiratory symptoms and, in some cases, diarrhoea, especially in young children.. To prevent RSV infections, one must take the vaccinations properly that are available for both infants and adults. Additionally, good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, avoiding contact with sick individuals, and disinfecting surfaces, can also help to reduce the spread of the virus. Early treatment of RSV symptoms, including adequate hydration and fever management, is crucial for recovery.
