In a viral TikTok video, the tourists engaged in a nine-minute quarrel with the durian stall owner, claiming the durian tasted unpleasant and they felt uncomfortable and requested a refund.

The tourists had already paid RM50 (US$11.58) for the durian and refused to pay the remaining RM9.

“No way, you have to give us some compensation, it’s so disgusting!” one of the tourists said.

However, the vendor refused, accusing them of attempting to avoid payment after consuming the entire durian.

After the argument heated up, the stall owner was frustrated and asked the tourists to leave if they did not want to pay further.

The tourists quickly left.

A video of the incident that happened on April 26 quickly went viral on social media, sparking a debate online.

Some criticized the tourists for attempting to avoid payment after eating the durian.

One netizen commented, “These aren’t tourists, they are thieves.”

Another added, “The vendor should call the police. This case should be investigated instead of letting them leave.”

Others suggested stronger actions, with one person stating, “They should be banned from entering Malaysia ever again.”

Penang, especially the town of Balik Pulau, is known for its durian orchards, producing some of the finest varieties like Black Thorn, Musang King, and Ang Heh (Red Prawn). The durian season in Penang typically runs from mid-May to early August.

Durian is primarily grown in tropical countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The fruit is distinctive for its large size, strong odor, and thorn-covered rind.

Durian is dubbed as “king of fruit” in Malaysia.
