Washington, DC [US], May 10: US White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the US aims to de-escalate tensions between India and Pakistan in her remarks on US attempts to mediate the dispute between the two nations.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been in de-escalation negotiations with the presidents of both countries, according to Leavitt.
The secretary of state, Marco Rubio, who is also now our national security advisor, has been heavily engaged in this. He said, “The President wants this to de-escalate as soon as possible.”
Leavitt said that negotiations are underway to avoid further escalation of the long-standing issue between the two countries.
“He is aware that, even before President Trump took office, these two nations had been at enmity with one another for decades. I did speak with him yesterday, however, and he has solid contacts with both nations’ governments as well as Secretary of State Marco Rubio. In an effort to resolve this problem, he has been in close contact with the leaders of both nations,” he said.
When asked whether US President Donald Trump would personally contact those nations’ leaders in an attempt to defuse the situation, Leavitt said, “If and when that happens, we will certainly let you know.”
Trump, meanwhile, voiced his alarm on Wednesday (local time) about the worsening situation between India and Pakistan and promised to do all in his power to ease tensions along the border.
Trump said that India and Pakistan should resolve their differences in response to the terror assault in Pahalgam on April 22.
“Oh, it’s just awful! According to my stance, I get along with both. I want to see them sort things out since I know both of them very well. I hope they can quit now because I want to see them cease. Hopefully, they can now stop because they’ve been tit for tat. However, I am aware of how well we get along with both nations. We get along well with both of them. And I’d want to see it end,” he said.
“And if I can do anything to help, I will I will be there,” said Trump.
