Buddha Purnima 2025: Prince Siddharth Gautam, who later became Gautam Buddha and established Buddhism, was born on this day, and it is commemorated every year as an auspicious holiday. The majority of South, Southeast, and East Asia, including China, Korea, Laos, Vietnam, Mongolia, Cambodia, and Indonesia, as well as India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet, commemorate the holy holiday, also known as Buddha Jayanti.
It should be mentioned that the day is marked on the day of the full moon in the Hindu month of Vaisakha, which occurs in April or May.
Buddha Purnima will be observed on May 12 in 2025. The ceremony this year will commemorate Lord Buddha’s 2,587th birthday.
Buddhism Purnima 2025: Background and Importance
Gautam Buddha was a philosopher and spiritual leader who was once known as Siddharth Gautam. Scholars have suggested that he lived between 563 and 483 BCE, while the precise dates of his existence are still up for question. The birthplace of Gautam Buddha was Lumbini, which is now in Nepal. In Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, he reached Mahaparinirvana (death) at the age of 80.
Vesak, a celebration of Buddha’s enlightenment, falls during the festival, providing an opportunity to share the message of peace. Because three important occasions in the life of Gautam Buddha occurred on this day, the full moon has special significance in Buddhism. On this day, Prince Siddharth was born in Lumbini Grove.
On a full moon day, after six years of suffering, he became Gautam Buddha and achieved enlightenment beneath the shadow of the Bodhi tree. Thirdly, after 45 years of teaching, he died and achieved Nibbana (Nirvana), which is freedom from the cycle of reincarnation.
