Virat Kohli Test Retirement: Prior to the England tour, India’s batting mainstay Virat Kohli expressed his desire to retire from Test cricket to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
After considerable consideration, Kohli informed the BCCI that he was ready to end his career’s red-ball chapter, according to an Indian Express story.
He has told the board that he is leaving Test cricket because he has made up his mind. With the important England trip approaching, the BCCI has encouraged him to reconsider. This publication was informed by sources that he has not yet responded to the request.
However, after the former captain informed the BCCI of his desire to retire from Test cricket, a top BCCI official has encouraged Kohli to reconsider his choice.
Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, revealed his abrupt decision to retire from the longest format of cricket with immediate effect only days before to this development. Notably, after India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign, both Rohit and Kohli have called it quits on their T20I careers.
The selection committee is supposed to complete the red-ball squad before the five-Test England trip begins on June 20. If Kohli follows through on his decision, the Indian side would be left with a middle order that is mostly untested.
As a result, India will start with wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, followed by Rishabh Pant.
The sources state that Kohli has been considering his Test future after a poor performance in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia earlier this year.
Despite having 30 hundreds under his belt, the right-handed batsman only managed 190 runs in 5 BGT matches, including a century during India’s victory in the first Test.
In the meanwhile, Kohli, 36, has scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85 in 123 Test matches for India. He scored 1,990 runs in 37 games, including three hundreds, but his golden patch in the Test ended as his average declined over the previous five years.
In addition, the India team would be without two seasoned, productive players who have guided the team to victory in several series for over 11 years. India’s Test leadership was assumed by Rohit in February 2022 after Kohli, who is already retired from T20IS, took over in December 2014.
