Cologne have automatic promotion to the Bundesliga in their own hands, after Florian Kainz scored twice in a comeback win at Nuremberg.

King Kainz

The match began with early drama as Colgone had a third-minute penalty claim overturned after a VAR check. The first half was then a tale of missed opportunities. Jan Thielmann came closest, hitting the post in the 19th minute. Nürnberg, while under pressure for much of the half, had their own golden opportunity when Tim Janisch headed over from close range.

Janis Antiste made no such mistake, putting Nuremberg ahead just seconds after the restart. However, interim coach Friedhelm Funkel’s side showed remarkable resilience and were quick to get back into the game, courtesy of Kainz’ well-taken equaliser with 67 minutes gone.

As the match entered its final stages, both teams pushed for a winner. Kainz provided in the 90th minute, sending the away fans into raptures. Cologne will be promoted if Elversberg and Paderborn both fail to win this weekend. Failing that, a point at home to Kaiserslautern on the final day will guarantee their place back in the Bundesliga next season.
