Vietnamese fried spring roll cracks world’s top 100 snacks

With golden shell and savory filling, fried spring roll has become the only Vietnamese representative on TasteAtlas’s 2025 ranking of the world’s 100 most favorite snacks.

Ranked at 88th, Father Gioalso known as no in northern Vietnam, features a filling of ground pork and ground shrimp wrapped in rice paper, along with ingredients such as carrots, cabbage, mushrooms, bean sprouts, and glass noodles. The rolls are deep-fried, offering a crackly texture.

The dish is served with a dipping sauce, usually fish sauce or a sweet and sour blend. While often an appetizer, it can also be enjoyed as a main meal and is a staple in Vietnamese households and restaurants worldwide.

Father Gio was also recognized regionally, ranking 28th on TasteAtlas’s list of Top 100 Southeast Asian street foods.

For the “Top 100 Snacks in the World” list released on April 15, 2025, TasteAtlas recorded 65,169 user ratings, of which 43,870 were recognized as valid.

Topping the list was karantika, a custardy chickpea dish from Algeria. It was followed by China’s guotie, a pan-fried dumpling filled with pork and vegetables, and Japan’s Hamamatsu gyoza, a type of dumpling known for its circular frying technique.
