Rajouri’s Additional Deputy Commissioner, Raj Kumar Thappa, tragically lost his life on Saturday morning after his residence was hit by Pakistani shelling. The incident occurred amid a series of attacks targeting multiple areas in Jammu and Kashmir, intensifying the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan. Raj Kumar Thappa’s death has deeply affected the local administration, with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah mourning the loss of a dedicated officer.

Fatal Attack in Rajouri

Around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, a shell struck Raj Kumar Thappa’s residence in Rajouri, a border district in Jammu and Kashmir. Raj Kumar Thappa had stepped out of his home after hearing multiple explosions but re-entered, only for the shell to hit his room, causing his fatal injuries. Rajouri, which has been facing severe cross-border shelling from Pakistan, woke up to loud explosions in several areas, including Srinagar, Jammu, and Udhampur, early that morning. The attack claimed the life of the additional district development commissioner, who was known for his active role in the administration.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s Response

Reacting to the tragic loss, Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah expressed his deep sadness and shock. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he shared the devastating news of Raj Kumar Thappa’s death, remembering his dedication to the state’s administration. Abdullah recalled how Raj Kumar Thappa had been accompanying the Deputy Chief Minister of the state around the district the previous day and had attended an online meeting chaired by him. “We have lost a dedicated officer of the J&K Administration Services,” Omar Abdullah wrote.

This tragic incident is a reminder of the heavy toll that the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan has been taking on civilians and government officials alike. Pakistan’s shelling has further destabilized the region, causing widespread fear and destruction.

The Wider Impact of Cross-Border Shelling

The shelling in Rajouri is part of a broader pattern of attacks targeting multiple cities in Jammu and Kashmir, with loud explosions reported across the region. Alongside the fatalities, the attacks have heightened tensions and uncertainty, particularly in areas near the border. Pakistani shelling has also been reported in Akhnoor, Gurez, Uri, Hamirpur, and Pallanwala, further escalating the already tense situation. As the region faces increased violence, the loss of lives, including that of a respected officer like Raj Kumar Thappa, continues to deepen the human cost of the conflict.
