FIR Filed Against Student for Criticizing Military Action

Mangaluru: The Karnataka Police have initiated legal proceedings against a postgraduate student for allegedly posting a message that criticized 'Operation Sindoor,' a military response to a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir that resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals. The FIR was lodged by the Konaje police in Mangaluru following a formal complaint.

The student, who is from the sensitive Mangaluru district, shared an Instagram post that condemned the military operations conducted by Indian forces in Pakistan.

Reshma N. Bariga, a Mangaluru University student residing in Belalu near Belthangady, was identified as the individual behind the controversial post.

In her message, she utilized the hashtag ‘#dikkaraoperationSindoora’ (Down with Operation Sindoor) and included poetic lines reflecting on the futility of war. Her poem, written in Kannada, expressed that war leads to 'total darkness,' according to police reports.

The post sparked significant backlash, leading Reshma to remove it. However, she subsequently published another post reaffirming her opposition to 'Operation Sindoor.'

Numerous individuals and some Hindu organizations called for legal action against her. A complaint was lodged by Chandrashekar Putta Marati, a local resident, at the Konaje police station.

In response to the complaint, the police registered an FIR under various sections, including 192 (provocation intended to incite a riot), 196 (promoting enmity between groups based on religion, race, or language), and 353 (public mischief).

After facing criticism, Reshma released a statement expressing her patriotism and desire for peace in the country.

She stated, 'I want every citizen to live in peace and prosperity. I am proud to be Indian and do not wish for anyone to suffer due to terrorism. War has far-reaching effects. We must strive for peace and harmony. My intention was solely to advocate for the elimination of terrorism.'

The police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
