In a significant development aimed at easing tensions in South Asia, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif publicly thanked former US President Donald Trump for his role in facilitating a ceasefire with India. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sharif stated:

“We thank President Trump for his leadership and proactive role for peace in the region. Pakistan appreciates the United States for facilitating this outcome, which we have accepted in the interest of regional peace and stability. We also thank Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their valuable contributions for peace in South Asia. Pakistan believes this marks a new beginning in the resolution of issues that have plagued the region and prevented its journey toward peace, prosperity and stability.”

However, the Indian government has maintained that the initiative for the ceasefire came from Islamabad. According to a statement from Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the agreement was finalized after a direct approach from Pakistan. Misri revealed:

"Pakistan's Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) called Indian DGMO at 15:35 hours earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time. Today, instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding. The Directors General of Military Operations will talk again on the 12th of May at 1200 hours."

Sources within the Indian defense establishment have further clarified that the ceasefire was initiated after Pakistan explicitly communicated its decision to halt further strikes, formally requesting the ceasefire. These sources suggest that while the United States played a critical role in pressuring Pakistan into compliance—linking the release of a $1 billion IMF loan to the ceasefire agreement—it was Pakistan that made the initial overture.

With tensions high and both sides having recently exchanged artillery fire and aerial skirmishes, this ceasefire marks a critical moment in the ongoing attempts to stabilize the region. The success of this agreement could set a foundation for broader peace efforts, though significant challenges remain.

Amid reports of ceasefire violations by Pakistan just hours after the agreement, official sources told ABP News that these actions are the reason Prime Minister Modi has not publicly commented on the ceasefire.

They added that Trump’s decision to trust Pakistan and announce the agreement globally now raises questions about its reliability. The reported violations cast doubt on the US-brokered deal, as Pakistan appears unwilling to fully comply with the terms, despite being the one to initially approach the US for de-escalation, the sources said.
