Pakistan on Sunday welcomed US President Donald Trump's offer to mediate between Islamabad and New Delhi over the issue of Kashmir.
Earlier on Sunday, as Trump rushed to take credit for the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, he said he would work with both countries to solve the "thousand years" Kashmir issue.
“I will work with you both to see if, after a “thousand years,” a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir. God Bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done!!!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Pakistan welcomed the proposal saying the longstanding issue has serious implications for peace and security in South Asia and beyond.
In a statement on X, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said, "We also appreciate President Trump’s expressed willingness to support efforts aimed at the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute - a longstanding issue that has serious implications for peace and security in South Asia and beyond."
Oppn Leaders Slam Trump's Proposal
Leaders from the opposition in India including Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal slammed Trump for the proposal.
"Someone in the US establishment needs to seriously educate their President @POTUS @realDonaldTrump that Kashmir is not a biblical 1000-year-old conflict," said Congress MP Manish Tewari
"It started on 22nd October 1947 - 78 years ago when Pakistan invaded the Independent State of Jammu & Kashmir that subsequently was ceded to India in’ FULL’ by Maharaja Hari Singh on 26th October 1947 that includes areas illegally occupied by Pakistan till now," he added.
RJD MP Manoj Jha called Trump a new 'sarpanch' asking what locus standi he has on the issue.
"Many responsible persons talked, the day yesterday was unsettling in many ways. The announcement had to come from our side, but a new 'sarpanch', 'Chaudhary saheb' (Donald Trump) announced the ceasefire. He talked about Kashmir and its history, who are you to talk about this when you don't have the locus standi?" he questioned.
"It is against the spirit of Shimla accord. The mood of the nation is akin to what it was in 1971, it should remain so," he added.
