- sweet, juicy, and delicious - are a perfect summer to grow in your . Strawberries thrive in pots, window boxes, hanging baskets, grow bags, and specialised strawberry planters, as well as directly in the ground.

This versatility makes them ideal for small gardens, balconies, and even windowsills. They are also a great crop to grow with children, offering a fun and rewarding gardening experience. An expert has shared one rule that will result in a big and juicy strawberry. Plant expert and founder of TN Nursery Tammy Sons revealed that the "foundations for success" are unlocked by good soil and proper spacing.

He told : "My strawberry plants receive full sunlight exposure while I maintain a spacing of 12 to 18 inches between each plant to ensure they have enough space to expand.

"The best soil for strawberries combines proper drainage with slight acidity and abundant organic content, which I achieve by adding compost before planting."

She shared that her personal watering schedule includes "deep sessions twice weekly" in addition to further sessions during particularly dry periods.

According to the , summer-fruiting strawberries are the most popular type and produce the largest fruit. They have a short but heavy cropping period of two or three weeks. There are early-, mid- and late-fruiting cultivars, cropping from early to mid-summer. If covered with cloches or grown in a greenhouse from late winter, they will provide even earlier harvests.

Before planting, thoroughly weed the area, then enrich the soil by incorporating two buckets of well-rotted manure or garden compost per square metre/yard.

Sow in autumn or spring, into trays of peat-free seed compost. Scatter the seeds thinly and lightly cover with sharp sand.

Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roots and water well to soak the soil.

Trim the roots lightly to 10cm (4in) if necessary, then spread them out in the hole. Replace the soil, ensuring that the base of the crown rests lightly on the surface, before firming in gently with your fingers.
