New Delhi: The Jeep Meridian, which in Brazil is sold as Commander, has now been updated with a 2.2-litre diesel engine. The Jeep Meridian in India is sold with a 2.0-litre diesel engine, which was the only engine option previously available in the Brazilian market as well. However, now the top spec, Overland, will get a more powerful engine.

The Jeep Commander’s Overland will have a 2.2-litre turbo diesel that will produce 197bhp and 450 Nm of peak torque. The engine will come with a 9-speed automatic transmission that will send power to all four of its wheels. The 2.0-litre version only produces 168 bhp and 380 Nm of torque.

Jeep Commander’s upgrades

The Jeep Commander for Brazil along with the new engine also has a number of upgrades to its name. It now has a bigger front brakes in order to manage the more. The 9-speed automatic also get 14 percent longer ratio to handle the additional torque. It will be faster as well, going 0-100 kph in 9.7 seconds which earlier took 11.6 seconds. It borrows the new ARLA 32 type emission reduction system from the Ram Rampage pickup truck.

The Jeep Commander for Brazil is built at the brand’s plant in Goiana, along with the left-hand driving version of the Compass and Renegade. The Jeep Meridian that is sold in India is built in the company’s Ranjangoan facility in Pune for both export and the domestic market.

The Meridian in India comes with a 2.0-litre MultiJet II diesel engine that makes 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque,e combined with a 9-speed automatic transmission with a four-wheel drive system. In fact, the engine is used by Jeep Compass, Tata Harrier and Safari, MG Hector and Hector Plus. The engine is in line with new regulations, and it is unlikely to be replaced by the new 2.2-litre diesel engine.

However, a little more power in the Jeep Meridian would have been welcomed, with the car being the least powerful of its rivals. For the money spent on a Meridian, the 168 bhp is much less power for an off-roader.
