The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, commonly referred to as the Harbin Ice Lantern Festival or simply the Harbin Ice Festival, encompasses numerous competitions in ice and snow sculpture, winter fishing, sports, activities, celebrations, parades, and events. It features five theme parks: Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo, Harbin Ice and Snow World, Harbin Wanda Ice Lantern World, Zhaolin Park Ice Lantern Art Fair, and Songhua River Ice and Snow Carnival.
Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo is dedicated to snow sculptures, while both Harbin Wanda Ice Lantern World and Zhaolin Park Ice Lantern Art Fair focus on ice lanterns. Wanda Ice Lantern World, being larger than Zhaolin Park Ice Lantern Fair, showcases numerous ice lanterns, winter activities, and shows. Harbin Ice and Snow World serves as a theme park for ice and snow sculptures, illuminated ice buildings, and various ice and snow activities, making it the most significant theme park of the ice festival. Songhua River Ice and Snow Carnival, situated on the icy Songhua River, features many ice and snow sculptures and captivating winter activities.
The annual Harbin Ice Festival, established in 1963, is the world's largest of its kind. Despite interruptions during the Cultural Revolution, it resumed by 1985. Alongside Japan's Sapporo Snow Festival, Canada's Quebec City Winter Carnival, and Norway's Ski Festival, the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is recognized as one of the top four ice and snow festivals globally.
Traditionally, the festival opens around December 20 and extends until the end of February, with the official opening ceremony typically held on January 5th each year. This date is considered the formal beginning of the festival. The event boasts a diverse range of activities, including an ice and snow carnival, international ice sculpture competitions, ice lantern shows, sliding, ice-sailing, sledging, ice hockey, ice football, speed skating, cross-field skiing, Alpine skiing competitions, fishing, swimming, ice and snow film art shows, painting exhibitions, calligraphy displays, photo exhibitions, folk song and dance performances, wedding ceremonies on ice, trade talks, trade fairs, and various national or international sports events.
