Jasprit Bumrah has reportedly stepped back from the race to be India’s next Test captain, according to Sky Sports News. With Bumrah out, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are the main candidates to take over from Rohit Sharma, who recently announced his retirement from Test cricket. Although many thought Bumrah would be the top pick, he’s let the selectors know he’s unable to play all five matches in a long Test series due to workload concerns. Since India will play five Tests against England, the selectors want someone who can play through the whole series.
Now, they’re likely deciding between Gill and Pant for the captain role. The one who doesn’t get picked as captain will likely be named vice-captain. We should hear the official announcement along with India’s squad for the England series by May 24.
In other news, Sky Sports News also reports that Virat Kohli has told the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) he plans to retire from Test cricket ahead of the England series. The BCCI hasn’t made any public statement but hasn’t denied the report either. Kohli apparently told chief selector Ajit Agarkar about his decision in April, wanting to step away before the new World Test Championship cycle starts in June. Agarkar was supposed to meet with Kohli again, but that’s uncertain now due to rising tensions at the India-Pakistan border, and the government has advised people against traveling between cities.
