Deciding whether or not to bring a home is a huge decision and one which takes months of research and planning. It's especially important to know which breed you think will work best for your lifestyle and how much walking or food they need.
One dog trainer who goes by on shares canine advice with his 2.3 million followers. In a recent video, the dog trainer shared his thoughts on the best breed for first-time dog owners.
The TikTok user said: "The best breed for first-time dog owners is a Golden retriever.
"Absolute epitome of a gentle dog. [They're] intelligent and friendly with just about everyone and everything.
"They're also active enough so they can go with you pretty much anywhere if that's what you want."
Golden retrievers are also said to be highly trainable and make great family pets thanks to their love for people.
They are also known for being active and playful, which helps them bond with their owners.
The dog trainer added: "If you want a lazier dog, get yourself a greyhound. Greyhounds are one of the easiest dogs on the planet to train.
"They are very low maintenance and have very little exercise requirements."
However, the dog trainer warned that all dogs still need to get outside for fresh air and exercise.

The TikToker continued: "Honourable mentions include the Newfoundland, Leonberger and Labrador retriever... very, very good dogs."
The Cockapoo breed was also mentioned as being a good breed, as well as a Labradoodle.
The expert added: "Also, a Pug. Although Pugs are one of the unhealthiest dogs on this list by a country mile, they are actually one of the friendliest dogs on the planet."
