Schools Reopen In Parts Of Jammu And Kashmir, Punjab After Ceasefire
ABP Live News | May 13, 2025 1:11 PM CST

Schools in the non-border districts of Jammu and Kashmir have reopened following the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan, bringing a sense of normalcy back to the region. Educational institutions had been shut down earlier due to escalating tensions along the border, primarily after Operation Sindoor by the Indian armed forces.

According to reports from ANI, schools in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir are among those that reopened today, as the security situation stabilized. This move comes in response to the Divisional Commissioner of Jammu's decision to allow educational institutions in non-border districts to resume in-person classes, while keeping schools in the sensitive border districts closed due to ongoing security concerns.

A post from the Divisional Commissioner on X (@Divcomjammu) confirmed the reopening, stating, "The Education Department has announced the reopening of educational institutions in non-border districts of Jammu, while schools in border districts will remain closed. This decision was made after a thorough review of the situation by Divisional Commissioner Jammu."

Yesterday the X handle of Divisional Commisioner Jammu posted that, "All Schools, Colleges & educational institutions (private as well as Government) in the Jammu province except the Medical colleges shall remain closed tomorrow on 13th May in view of the prevailing situation."

Which today morning quoted the same post and added that the department has decided to open the schools which are in the non-border areas. The post said, "After reviewing the situation Education Department has decided to reopen the non border districts educational institutions & Border districts will continue closure of education institutions."

Specifically, schools in Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi, and Ramban – all non-border districts – have reopened, while those in the border districts of Kathua, Jammu, Rajouri, Poonch, Samba, and Udhampur remain closed. This decision follows the May 12 order that had shut down all educational institutions (except medical colleges) across the province for May 13, in response to heightened border tensions.

Schools in Punjab Also Resume Classes in Non-Border Areas
Meanwhile, educational institutions in the non-border districts of Punjab, including Gurdaspur, Sangrur, and Barnala, have also resumed classes today. However, border areas like Amritsar have opted to continue online classes for universities and colleges as a precautionary measure.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and further updates regarding school closures in border districts are expected as the security situation continues to evolve.
