India’s New Delhi According to the ICC website, captain Chamari Athapaththu of Sri Lanka was fined 10% of her match fee for breaking Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

The event happened in Colombo during the hosts’ match against South Africa in the last group stage of the just finished tri-series in Sri Lanka. The match was high-scoring, and the Proteas won.

According to the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Staff, Athapaththu violated Article 2.2, which deals with “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”

Additionally, as it was Athapaththu’s first offense in a 24-month period, one demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record.

When Athapaththu was struck for a four by Annerie Dercksen in the 32nd over of South Africa’s innings, she removed her sunglasses and slammed them to the ground, shattering them into several pieces.

Third umpire Lyndon Hannibal, fourth umpire Nimali Perera, and on-field umpires Anna Harris and Dedunu de Silva all made the accusations.

Since Athapaththu acknowledged the offense and agreed to the penalties suggested by Michelle Pereira of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, there was no need for a hearing.

Level 1 infractions are punishable by one or two demerit points, a minimum of an official reprimand, and a maximum of 50% of the player’s match fee.

India ultimately won the tri-series after defeating the tournament’s hosts, Sri Lanka, by 97 runs in the final. Sneh Rana won Player of the Series after taking 15 wickets in the Tri-series, while Mandhana won Player of the Match for her century in the finals.
