In a bid to curb school dropouts and support struggling students, the Directorate of Education (DoE) has issued a new set of guidelines for government school students seeking admission to Class 10 under the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) for the 2025-26 academic year.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the NIOS to provide students who have repeatedly failed traditional exams with a renewed opportunity to complete their formal education through open schooling. The move aims to ensure that no student is left behind due to academic setbacks, according to news agency PTI.

Who Can Apply?

As per the official circular, students enrolled in Delhi government schools under the DoE who have either failed or been placed in the 'compartment' category in Class 9 or 10 at least twice up to the last academic session, are eligible to register for the NIOS Class-10 programme.

However, students who have faced such academic hurdles for the first time in the current 2024-25 session do not qualify for this initiative. These students are encouraged to continue their studies in their current schools.

Mandatory Documentation And Process

To be considered, students must possess a valid School Leaving Certificate issued by their respective schools. Additionally, the responsibility of identifying eligible students, reaching out to them, and ensuring their enrollment falls squarely on the heads of schools.

All relevant student details must be accurately updated in the Management Information System (MIS) before the registration process begins.

Study Centres And Subject Options

Classes will be held at around 75 designated study centres spread across Delhi, ensuring accessibility for students across various localities. Students enrolling under the NIOS programme can choose two languages, with Hindi, English, and Sanskrit available as optional languages.

Social Science would be a mandatory subject, and students may select two additional subjects with practical components. These include Home Science, Painting, and Science & Technology

Financial Support Through DBT

Eligible students will also receive support through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme offered by the DoE, which includes a uniform subsidy, helping to ease the financial burden on families. 

The last date to submit online applications and pay the registration fee is July 31, 2025. Students and parents are urged to complete the process well before the deadline to avoid last-minute complications.
