New maps predict a that is set to sweep across the UK next week, stretching more than 500 miles from Cornwall in the south west to as far north as Scotland, bringing widespread heavy rainfall. According to the latest map by WX Charts, rainfall is expected to sweep across the UK next week on Friday, May 23 at around 6pm. The map appears to show an Atlantic front pushing eastwards bringing significant precipitation.

The heaviest , shown in shades of orange and yellow, is focused around the southern areas of Southampton and London, as well as Birmingham, central Scotland and along the coastal areas of County Cork, Ireland's largest and southernmost county. Next week, temperatures are also set to drop with lows of 3C and 4C expected on Friday, according to WX Charts.

Another WX Charts map shows a drop in temperatures next week with parts of northern Scotland, including Wick and Inverness, could see lows of 3C and 4C around midday.

Edinburgh is also expected to go down to about 5C while Newcastle and Belfast are expected to hover around 7C.

In southern England, temperatures are also set to go down to around 5C and 7C, significantly cooler than the warm and sunny conditions experienced this week in the UK.

Unsettled weather and cooler temperatures are expected to arrive by late next week.

The Met Office's long range forecast from May 18 to May 27 reads: "Mostly dry and largely sunny conditions are expected to continue for the vast majority over the next several days as a slow-moving area of high pressure remains dominant.

"It will continue to be warm or very warm for many, especially in the west, but it will be remain cooler in the east, especially along coasts, with some coastal areas seeing persistent low cloud at times, accompanied by a brisk breeze off the North Sea.

"There is an increasing chance that conditions will turn more unsettled from late next week though, as areas of rain and strengthening winds threaten from the west and/or south (the latter bringing a risk of thunderstorms). This would most likely to be accompanied by temperatures dropping nearer to average for the time of year."
