Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Simi Garewal, one of the veteran actresses from the Indian cinema, is attending the Cannes Film Festival for the first time in 2025. She will view the screening of Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film, Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest) from 1970 which has been digitally remastered into a 4K version.

Her appearance is part of celebrating Garewal’s performance as Duli, the tribal Santhal female character. The screening is part of Cannes Classics on May 19 with the rest of the world celebrating international cinema. This marks a major event for the festival and it’s celebration of the restored world cinema.

Restored by Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, and Heritage Foundation

The world premiere showed the restoration leading to a collaboration with the Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project. This was done by famous filmmakers like Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, and Film Heritage Foundation (FHF). They received aided support from Janus Films, Criterion Collection, and the Golden Globe Foundation where restoration work was performed at L’Immagine Ritrovata.

Simi Garewal’s Red Carpet Customized Constume by Karleo

In an Instagram post by Garewal aged 77, she declared before the event that she wants to wear a customized dress tailored for her by Karleo the brand lead by Karan Berry and Leon Vaz. “Due to my love of their aesthetics…I decided @karleofashion so I can enjoy their behind the scene [email protected]_MeContet(str)” she shared in the video where she goes through prep work for the red carpet.

Screeing A-List Guests

Sharmila Tagore, Purnima Dutta, Margaret Bodde( executive director of The Film Foundation), and Shivendra Singh Dungarpur( FHF founder) will be joining Garewal for the screening. The English title of the film is Days and Nights in the Forest which adapts a novel by Sunil Gangopaydhy.

Cannes Celebrates Indian Cinema

Wes Anderson, who’s known to be a fantastic admirer of Ray, screened the movie for us as a way to celebrate Satyajit Ray’s legacy with Aranyer Din Ratri. One of Ray’s beloved ensemble yt’s films, Aranyer Din Ratri features a cast including Soumitra Chatterjee, Shabona Sen, Sharmila Tagore and Robi Ghosh.
