With 31 points from Tyrese Haliburton, the Indiana Pacers overcame a deficit to overcome the Cleveland Cavaliers 114-105 on Tuesday, eliminating the top seeds from the NBA playoffs.
The Cavaliers’ promising season ended in a sad manner on their own floor as Indiana won the series 4-1 thanks to a burst of six three-pointers from Haliburton.
Pascal Siakam scored 21 points to support Haliburton’s scoring, while Aaron Nesmith added 13 points and 13 rebounds. 18 points were scored by Andrew Nembhard.
After jumping out to a 19-point lead halfway through the second quarter at the Rocket Arena, Cleveland, behind 3-1 going into Tuesday’s game five, seemed poised to save the series.
However, Haliburton came alive to cut Cleveland’s lead to four points at 56-52 at the half after making five of five three-pointers in a second quarter that saw 15 points.
The Pacers’ offensive assault continued throughout the third quarter, as the visitors outscored Cleveland 33–20 to take a decisive 85–76 lead going into the fourth quarter.
After 16 points from Donovan Mitchell, who was obviously still dealing with the painful left ankle that had threatened to keep him out of the game, Cleveland made a comeback attempt in the last quarter.
With a little over five minutes left, a three-pointer by Mitchell reduced the Indiana advantage to one point at 98-97.
However, the Cavaliers’ inability to pose a threat from three-point range—they only made nine out of 35 tries from beyond the arc—persisted as an issue, and the Pacers’ defense put an end to any dreams of a comeback.
Fourth-seeds In the Eastern Conference finals, Indiana will now play either the Boston Celtics or their bitter rivals, the New York Knicks. The victor will advance to the NBA Finals the following month.
If the Knicks defeat the Celtics on Wednesday, they will have a 3-1 lead over Boston in the series and will be able to schedule a matchup with Indiana.
