By mutual consent, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic have terminated their coaching relationship. After just six months of collaboration, the news was released. Even if their time together was short, there were some promising moments, especially at the Australian Open, when Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinals before having to withdraw in the middle of the match due to an injury.
As they said their goodbyes, the two exchanged kind words. “Thank you, coach Andy, for all the hard work, fun, and support over the last six months on and off the court — really enjoyed deepening our friendship together,” said Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam winner, in a statement. “Thanks to Novak for the incredible opportunity to work together, and thanks to his team for all their hard work over the past six months,” Murray, 37, who had made his first excursion into coaching after decades on the court, responded with similar sincerity. I hope Novak has a successful remainder of the season.
Although Murray signed an “indefinite” contract with Djokovic’s staff in November, focusing mostly on the US swing and a few clay-court competitions, their partnership ended up lasting just four tournaments. Despite a strong start in Melbourne, where Murray’s tactical contributions were commended, Djokovic’s 2024 campaign has been rife with errors so far. He has lost in the first round of four of his last five tournaments, including an unexpected loss in Monte Carlo and an unexplained absence from the Italian Open. The one silver lining was in Miami, where Djokovic advanced to the final without losing a set but lost in two hotly fought tie-breaks to Jakub Mensik, 19.
