Delh New According to official statistics released on Wednesday, the NDA administration, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has significantly outperformed the UPA in limiting retail inflation, particularly in the areas of food and gasoline.
“Double-digit inflation (above 10 percent) during the UPA era is no longer a concern, reflecting effective governance and price control in the past decade,” BJP politician Amit Malviya said in a post on the social networking platform X.
Citing government figures, he said, “Retail inflation has not exceeded 8% since 2014.” This is in contrast to the UPA’s 2004–14 average of 8.1%, which was 10.4% between 2009–14.
However, during the UPA government’s tenure from January 2012 to April 2014, inflation exceeded double digits nine times and was over 9% in 22 of 28 months.
The head of the BJP Information Technology division, Malviya, said that retail inflation continued its downward trend in April 2025, dropping to 3.16 percent, the lowest level in over six years.
Retail inflation for FY 2024–2025 was 4.6%, the lowest since 2018–19, and it has decreased for three years in a row.
“Overall, the data shows better inflation control under the NDA government compared to the UPA era, especially in food and fuel,” he said.
With the implementation of tangible measures like the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which offers free rations to over 80 crore citizens (extended until 2029), and the launch of “Bharat” brands for the retail sale of cereals and pulses at reasonable prices through NAFED, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandar, the BJP-led NDA government has been successful in keeping inflation under control.
In addition, a dynamic buffer stock of pulses is kept under the Price Stabilization Fund, and inventories are released from the buffer in a regulated manner to guarantee that customers may purchase and afford pulses.
In order to increase market availability and regulate retail prices, the government regularly removes wheat and rice from the central pool via the Open Market Sale Scheme.
Regarding fuels, the LPG subsidy and cylinder prices have been lowered to assist both PM Ujjwala and ordinary customers. As of March 9, 2024, the price of non-subsidized LPG was lowered by Rs 100 every 14.2 kg cylinder.
