In light of current tensions between India and Pakistan, the Cyber Crime Headquarters has taken strong action against those allegedly disseminating anti-national propaganda online, per Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s instruction. 25 people have been detained and 40 social media accounts have been suspended for allegedly sharing aggressive and false content against the Indian Army and the country.
The raid comes after emotions were raised by the Indian Army’s aggressive operation against terrorists, DGP Prashant Kumar said. As a result, a flood of divisive and false remarks started making the rounds on social media sites like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. One account was found on YouTube, while the rest of the flagged accounts were run on Facebook and Instagram.
To look into the content of these accounts, a high-level investigative team was established under the direction of ADG Law and Order Amitabh Yash. FIRs were filed under cybercrime legislation and arrests were made when anti-national behavior was confirmed.
The DGP emphasized that in order to stop the propagation of false information, the Cyber Crime Headquarters continues to monitor internet platforms 24/7. Additionally, he cautioned that anybody found guilty of spreading rumors or inciting panic would face severe legal repercussions and urged individuals to avoid sharing unverified material, particularly that which pertains to national security.
The public has been advised to use the official fact-checking website, UPPViralCheck, to confirm any dubious information, pictures, or videos.
