Gardening guru Alan Titchmarsh has landed a new role away from his ITV show Love Your Weekend. The green-fingered icon took to Instagram to announce his latest venture, posting a snapshot with Dame Mary Berry and expressing his honour at succeeding her: "Honoured to be taking over from Dame Mary Berry as President of the National Garden Scheme."

He vowed to do his utmost for the charity, which opens gardens across the nation to raise funds for nursing charities: "A hard act to follow - I'll do my best for this exceptional organisation, which provides unparalleled support to nursing charities through open gardens throughout the land."

Fans were quick to shower the former 'Ground Force' star with congratulations in the comments section. Supporters expressed their delight, with one commenting: "Congratulations Alan xxs," reports Manchester Evening News.

Another chimed in, "Many congratulations, Alan. The Presidency couldn't be in better hands. I love the NGS; there are so many beautiful gardens, whatever size. Bravo."

A third fan enthused about the perfect choice, saying, "The perfect succession. The humble amateur gardeners' organisation of choice! So happy for you and us!"

Another follower praised the news, writing: "Wonderful news Alan... and what a lovely photo of you two lovely legends xxx."

One more admirer predicted success: "Congratulations, Alan! You're going to be great!! We love the NGS."

In an emotional moment on his latest episode of Love Your Weekend, Alan opened up about his parents while conversing with Elaine Paige, who shared her casting as Grizabella in Cats following Judi Dench's injury.

Elaine revealed to Alan that performing a particular song held deep significance for her, saying, "I never tired of singing that song because it is so emotional both lyrically and in terms of the tune," during their heartfelt conversation.

Alan shared his own emotional connection with the song, admitting, "I still can't watch it without welling up. I was lucky enough, as you very sweetly coached me in the All-Star Musicals."

Elaine recalled the moment fondly, responding, "Of course, I remember," as Alan recounted, "But you said to me because I had to sing a song I had never sung before and that my dad had sung to my mum."

She empathised with his sentiment, interjecting, "You told me that, so I knew it was going to be emotional for you."

Alan reflected on Elaine's advice, adding, "You told me, 'Park that because it will get in the way of the song'."

Elaine confirmed the wisdom of her guidance, agreeing, "Exactly because it is true," and praised Alan's performance, concluding, "And you did, especially the last note, your heart was in it, Alan. You sang your heart out, and it was noticeable, it was heartbreaking."
