Justice Gavai was named in the seniority list after CJI Khanna.
Justice Br Gavai BECAME The 52nd CJI of India News in Hindi: Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gawai took oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India today. President Draupadi Murmu was sworn in as CJI to Murmu Justice Gawai. The term of the current CJI Sanjeev Khanna has ended on 13 May.
Justice Gavai was named in the seniority list after CJI Khanna. So Justice Khanna took his name forward. However, his term is only 7 months old.
According to a profile on the Supreme Court website, Justice Gavai was promoted as Supreme Court judges on 24 May 2019. His retirement date is 23 November 2025.
