New York/Damascus, May 14, 2025 — The United Nations has welcomed the United States’ decision to lift sanctions on Syria, describing it as a crucial step toward the war-torn country’s reconstruction and humanitarian recovery. The move, announced by U.S. President Donald Trumpis being seen as a significant policy shift with far-reaching implications for Syria’s future and regional stability.

UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersenlauded the decision and emphasized that it could accelerate the process of rebuilding essential infrastructure and services in Syria, which has endured more than a decade of conflict.

UN Envoy Highlights Humanitarian and Economic Impact

Taking to social media, Pedersen expressed strong support for the U.S. move, calling it “a decisive step” in enabling the delivery of humanitarian aid and revitalizing Syria’s public sectors. “This decision will not only assist in restoring vital services such as health and education,” he stated, “but will also help revive Syria’s economy, encourage regional cooperation, and ensure meaningful participation of Syrian civilians in the reconstruction process.”

The sanctions, originally imposed in response to human rights violations and political instability, had long hampered aid operations and economic development efforts in Syria. Their removal is expected to ease the import of medical supplies, construction materials, and humanitarian reliefwhich had been heavily restricted under prior U.S. policies.

Syria Moves Toward International Reintegration

The UN’s endorsement comes as Syria’s newly installed government seeks greater legitimacy and engagement with the international community. The lifting of sanctions by the U.S. is expected to strengthen Syria’s efforts to gain recognition and support on global platforms.

With American backing for easing restrictions, Syria could soon see a resumption of multilateral development programs and enhanced cooperation with regional partners. The decision may also pave the way for renewed dialogue on long-term peace and political reconciliation in the country.

While the full implications of the U.S. policy shift remain to be seen, the UN has reiterated its commitment to supporting Syria’s path toward stability, reconstruction, and inclusive governance.
