Obnews Tech Desk: Apple, one of the world’s largest tech companies, is no longer limited to gadgets like iPhone, iPad or Vision Pro. The company is working on a revolutionary technology that was only part of science fiction films. Apple is now developing a brain-computer interface technology, so that users will be able to control iPhone and iPad only with the help of their brain.
ALS ray of hope for patients
The purpose of this technique is to help those who are struggling with problems such as ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or severe injury to the spinal cord and are not able to use smart devices with hands.
Apple and Synchron’s partnership
According to the report by The Wall Street Journal, Apple has joined hands with American company Synchron to realize the project. Synchron is working on a technique that can turn the human brain signals into digital commands.
How does this brain-computer technology work?
In this technology, a small implant called ‘Stentrode’ is applied in the vein near the brain. This implant catchs electrical signals from the brain’s motor cortex and uses them via software to command the device. For example, selecting an icon on the screen.
Initial signs seen in testing
According to the report, this technique is being tested on Mark Jackson, who is suffering from ALS. They cannot walk, but with the help of this brain implant they have started using iPhone and Vision Pro. Although their speed is not yet like a normal mouse, it is continuously improving.

Strength from the ‘Switch Control’ feature of iOS
Apple is connecting this technique to the current ‘Switch Control’ feature of iOS, which is already present to help the disabled. Through this, the signals of the brain are being converted into screen movement.
New path will open for developers
Apple will soon release a new software standard to create apps working with third party developers brain implants. However, the technology is currently in the initial stage and is waiting for the approval from the US FDA.
Apple’s entry increased expectations
Although companies like Neuralink are already active in this field, the arrival of Apple is expected that this technology will now be able to reach the common people on a large scale.
