Chennai: Actor Santhanam’s upcoming comedy film, DD Next Level, produced by Arya under The Show People banner, is set to hit theaters on May 16. However, the film has landed in hot water over a song that allegedly mocks Lord Venkateswara (Tirupati Balaji), sparking outrage among Hindu groups and political parties.
Hindu Groups File Police Complaints
In Coimbatore, Hindu Munnani district president Dasarathan lodged a formal complaint at the Coimbatore Municipal Police Commissioner’s Office. The complaint alleges that the song “Srinivasa Govinda” disrespects Venkatesa Perumal, a revered deity in Hinduism, and was intentionally sung in a “mocking and sarcastic” tone.
The complaint further states that the song “hurts the sentiments of Hindu devotees” and could “disturb public peace.” It demands immediate legal action against Santhanam, producer Arya, and the film’s team for allegedly insulting Hindu religious beliefs.
TTD Trustee Sends Legal Notice, Demands Rs 100 Crore
The controversy has also reached Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), the governing body of the famous Tirupati Temple. Bhanu Prakash, a TTD trustee, sent a legal notice to Santhanam and the film’s production company through his lawyer. The notice demands immediate removal of the controversial song, compensation of Rs 100 crore for alleged defamation of Lord Venkateswara and legal action if the demands are not met within 15 days.
Political Outcry in Andhra Pradesh
The Jana Sena Party, founded by actor-politician Pawan Kalyan, has also joined the protests. Party members have condemned the song, calling it an “insult to Hindu devotees” and demanding accountability from the filmmakers.
Santhanam’s Defense: “I Am a Devotee”
Amid the growing backlash, Santhanam has defended the song, stating that it was not intended to offend anyone. He emphasized his personal devotion to Perumal, citing his practice of undertaking a pilgrimage on foot from Lower Tirupati to Upper Tirupati before his film releases.
“The song ‘Govinda Govinda’ does not hurt anyone’s feelings. I included it because I am a devotee of Perumal and have deep faith in God,” Santhanam explained.
Will the Film’s Release Be Affected?
With mounting protests and legal notices, DD Next Level could face last-minute hurdles before its scheduled release. Possible outcomes include censorship cuts to remove or modify the controversial song, delayed release if protests intensify and legal battles if cases proceed in court.
The filmmakers are now under pressure to address the concerns swiftly to avoid further disruptions.
