On Wednesday, India’s campaign at the Thailand Open, a BWF Super 500 tournament, got off to a mixed start. Aakarshi Kashyap and Unnati Hooda fought their way into the second round after fierce wins in the women’s singles, while top men’s singles shuttler Lakshya Sen lost in the opening round.

In a three-game match that lasted one hour and twenty minutes, Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen defeated Lakshya Sen in one of the day’s greatest upsets. Sen, one of the best badminton players in India, lost a match with swings in momentum, losing 18-21, 21-9, and 17-21.

Sen answered with a dominant effort in the second game, exploding with fast-paced rallies and precise smashes to tie the match after barely losing the first. However, Nguyen persevered in the last round, leading 17–13 and maintaining his poise under duress to accomplish the upset and advance to the second round. The elimination of Priyanshu Rajawat, who lost against Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan in three more games, 13-21, 21-17, and 16-21, added to India’s men’s singles problems.

After losing his second match in the qualifications on Tuesday, former world number one Kidambi Srikanth was unable to advance to the Thailand Open 2025 badminton tournament’s main phase.

The silver medalist from the world championships, Srikanth, lost to Tharun Mannepalli 21-16, 21-19 in the second round of qualifying after defeating Sankar Subramanian 21-15, 21-17 in the first.

Aakarshi and Kaoru Sugiyama of Japan participated in a thrilling match in the women’s singles, ultimately winning 21-16, 20-22, 22-20 after a wild battle. Her tenacity also made an impression on Unnati, one of the up-and-coming badminton players in India. Thamonwan Nithiittikrai, a local favorite, was defeated by the 17-year-old 21-14, 18-21, and 23-21.

Unnati easily won the first game, but in the second, her opponent came back. The youthful player, however, preserved match points in the dramatic third game before sealing an exciting victory in extra points.

However, Rakshitha Ramraj’s day ended in disappointment as she was put up against Singapore’s eighth seed Yeo Jia Min. Rakshitha got off to a good start and fought hard in the first game before losing 18-21, 7-21.
