
Bad news for iPhone lovers in India: In a significant update on India-US trade and a matter of bad news for iPhone lovers in India US President Donald Trump has asked Apple CEO Tim Cook not to manufacture iPhones in India. Sending shockwaves across India the US President said that India will take care of itself and asked the Apple CEO to stop building in India. Notably the development comes after Donald Trump claimed that he mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. If Apple goes on to stop the manufacturing of iPhones in India it may lead to an increase in iPhone prices in India. I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday. You can build in India if you want to take care of India because India is one of the highest tariff nations in the world so it is very hard to sell in India President Trump was quoted as saying in a report by news agency ANI while he was addressing a news conference in Doha Qatar. Readers must not that Apple recently took some steps to expand its iPhone production in India the ANI report said. Setting up assembly plants operating in the country Apple focused on increasing its iPhone production in India. Also Apple has signed contract with manufacturers such as Foxconn and Tata Group to set up production units for these plants the report said. In the last fiscal year Apple produced USD 22 billion worth of iPhones in India in the 12 months through March 2025 which is a huge 60 per cent jump from the prior year. Apple manufacturing in India As per the ANI report Tim Cooks Apple manufactured approximately 40-45 million iPhones in India in 2024 accounting for 18-20 per cent of its global output. Notably about 15 million of these India manufactured iPhones were exported to the US and about 13 million were exported to other international markets Also about 12 million of India-made iPhones were sold in the Indian market. Talking about the market strength of India the Republic of India stands as the Apples fourth-largest market globally in 2024 after the US China and Japan. (With inputs from agencies)
