
A proposal to give pensions to millions of gig workers in India is likely to be sent to the Cabinet next month. According to a CNBC Awaaz report companies like Ola Uber and Amazon have already agreed to this initiative which will bring major change in gig workers lives. Even delivery boys of companies like Zomato Swiggy Amazon and Flipkart will also get benefits of the scheme. Who Are Gig Workers? Gig workers are individuals employed on a contract basis and are compensated per task or project. They are freelancers online service providers content creators contract-based employees delivery boys and cab drivers. Gig workers are not permanent employees and work on a ‘pay-per-task’ basis. Government’s Pension Plan for Gig Workers The proposal to provide pensions to gig workers has received support from companies like Amazon and Zomato. These companies will contribute a specific percentage for the scheme and funds will be deposited into the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Gig workers will have two pension options under the scheme. The government wants to give social security to gig workers. It will also try to address demands for their health benefits retirement plans and other protections. Earlier this year Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also announced plans to launch a special platform for gig workers during the Union Budget. This platform is to identify gig workers and provide them healthcare services and other benefits. This move will change the gig economy and improve the financial security of delivery workers cab drivers and other contractual employees.
