Former cricket players for Team India would rather have Jasprit Bumrah as captain than Shubman Gill

Even though 25-year-old Shubman Gill appears to be the front-runner to lead India in Test matches after Rohit Sharma retired, some former players think experience, not youth, will be India’s strongest suit. For this reason, 31-year-old Jasprit Bumrah is their preferred candidate.

Wasim Jaffer, a former India opener, thinks Gill should only captain the Test squad in England when Bumrah needs a break.

“Unless Bumrah doesn’t want the responsibility, I believe he will be chosen as captain automatically. When Bumrah takes a break, he should take over as captain, with Gill serving as vice-captain. In this manner, Jaffer wrote on X on Friday, “Gill could also be developed without the stress of being the full-time captain.”

In an interview with Sports Today, India’s top batsman Sunil Gavaskar also backed Bumrah, saying, “If you appoint somebody else, they would always want an extra over from Bumrah.” If he is your best bowler, he will understand that “yes, I need to take a break now.” It must be Bumrah alone, in my opinion.

Sanjay Manjrekar, a former cricket player for India, really said he was shocked to hear that Bumrah wasn’t leading the race for Test leadership.

“That we are considering any other choice but Bumrah as Test captain astounds me! Concerned about his wounds? Next, choose your vice captain wisely,” Manjrekar said on X.

Remarkably, the great Indian off-spinner R Ashwin even went so far as to recommend all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as Bumrah’s backup option. First of all, Jasprit Bumrah is a noisy alternative to Gill, who is often seen as the captain. And why is Ravindra Jadeja forgotten? “I would say why not make him [Gill] an understudy of an experienced guy for two years before giving him the job on a full-time basis if you’re willing to go with someone new as captain,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
