As part of the central government’s ambitious Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar scheme, five gram panchayats in Udupi district have been recommended to be developed as model solar panchayats, according to Member of Parliament Kota Srinivas Poojary.

Speaking at a review meeting held at the Zilla Panchayat mini hall, the MP announced that Kotathattu, Kirimanjeshwara (Byndoor), Nitte (Karkala), Majoor (Kaup), and Uppoor (Udupi) have been proposed to the MESCOM as ideal candidates for the pilot phase of the scheme.

Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, each household can generate up to 300 units of electricity, and beneficiaries are eligible for a bank loan of ₹2.2 lakh from nationalized banks. Families installing rooftop solar panels will receive a subsidy of ₹78,000, he explained.

“The goal is to ensure full implementation of the scheme across every panchayat and urban local body. The initiative will be scaled up based on the progress of these initial five panchayats,” Poojary added.
He also mentioned that based on the outcome and efficiency of this first phase, the scheme will be expanded to more panchayats in the district in the second phase. The selected panchayats will also be recommended for special funding support, he said.

The meeting was attended by Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr. K. Vidya Kumari, Zilla Panchayat CEO Prateek Boyel, and MESCOM Superintendent Engineer P. Dinesh Upadhya, among others.

This move is expected to boost solar energy adoption at the grassroots level, supporting India’s larger mission of sustainable and renewable energy expansion while reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
