Stress and excessive tension are often considered primary triggers. Nevertheless, once diagnosed with diabetes, it’s crucial to consult a diabetologist and follow proper medication along with regular physical activity.
This approach helps maintain blood sugar levels under control. If left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to severe complications such as heart attacks, blindness, and organ dysfunction, with kidney failure being a frequent outcome.
When the kidneys start to fail, dialysis is often the only viable treatment. However, patients undergoing dialysis must adhere to a strict diet plan to maintain their health.
Below is a list of foods that dialysis patients should avoid or consume only under medical guidance.

# Salt/Sodium:
Weight gain between dialysis sessions can negatively impact your treatment. Therefore, it’s important to reduce salty foods and, if possible, avoid sodium intake altogether, which can also help lower your blood pressure. Instead of salt, use herbs and spices for seasoning, but steer clear of potassium-based salt substitutes.

# Meat/Protein:
Dialysis patients need about 8-10 ounces of protein daily. Protein-rich foods like fish, meat, and eggs should be included in your diet, but it’s essential to monitor portion sizes. Overeating protein can cause other complications. A small fish or half a chicken breast is a suitable serving.

# Cereals:
Carbohydrates significantly impact blood sugar levels. Diabetic patients typically require 6-10 servings of grains, cereals, or bread daily. However, avoid whole grains or high-fiber foods such as whole wheat bread, bran cereal, and brown rice, as they are high in phosphorus. Limiting these helps protect your bones and blood vessels.
# Dairy Products:
Limit dairy intake, including milk, yogurt, and cheese. Although these foods provide necessary nutrients, keep portions small—such as half a cup of milk or yogurt, or one ounce of cheese. Avoid skim or low-fat milk varieties since they contain phosphorus, which is harmful to dialysis patients.

# Fruits/Juice:
Avoid fruits high in potassium like kiwis, nectarines, prunes, bananas, and melons. Instead, opt for fruits like apples, berries, cherries, grapes, plums, or pineapple, as advised by your doctor.
# Drinks:
Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited during dialysis, as they can dangerously raise blood sugar levels. Prefer healthier options such as apple cider, grape juice, or lemonade.

# Vegetables/Salad:
All vegetables contain some potassium, so portion control is key. Aim for 2-3 servings of low-potassium vegetables daily, such as broccoli, cucumber, and lettuce. Avoid root vegetables like potatoes, carrots, and beets.

# Desserts:
Diabetic patients on dialysis should avoid desserts. However, sugar-free sweets, which are widely available, can be an alternative.
# Canned Food:
Canned foods tend to be high in sodium, which can cause fluid retention during dialysis. It’s best to avoid them.
# Nuts & Seeds:
Nuts and seeds are rich in potassium and phosphorus. Avoid foods like peanut butter, dried peas, and beans while undergoing dialysis.
