
1. FC Köln have returned to the Bundesliga as champions of the second division following a huge 4-0 win over Kaiserslautern on the final match day. They are joined by HSV who were already promoted the previous matchday.
Eric Martel and Luca Waldschmidt scored in the first half to make it comfortable viewing for the Köln fans as the Billy Goats headed into half time with a 2-0 lead.
The second half provided more of the same despite Waldschmidt missing a penalty in the 56th minute.
Following this, goals from Florian Kainz and retiree Mark Uth on his final game rounded off a perfect performance in both halves.
This win means that Köln are promoted at the first time of asking back up to the Bundesliga, finishing on 61 points.
Köln may still be joined by one further team in the Bundesliga in SV Elversberg who will face Heidenheim in the promotion/relegation play offs starting on Thursday.
This comes after just Elversberg’s second season in the 2. Bundesliga after being promoted in 2023 from the third division.
