As we begin the week of May 18 to May 25, bank customers should be mindful of the weekly closures even though no specific state or religious holidays are scheduled. Banking services will be impacted due to routine weekend offs, as mandated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The bank holiday calendar is published every year by the RBI. This calendar takes into account national holidays, special occasions, weekend leaves, and state-based celebrations.
Any changes in the holiday schedule are generally informed well in advance, however, it is always advised to stay in touch with your local bank branch to get the most updated information. Planning ahead can help you avoid any disruptions, especially if an extended weekend closure is on the horizon.
Bank Holidays This Week
In the upcoming week, closures will continue on May 24 and May 25 — these dates mark the RBI-approved fourth Saturday and the subsequent Sunday, respectively. Typically, banks remain closed on second, fourth Saturdays and all Sundays across the country.
Even when banks remain shut for the day, customers still have access to essential banking services. Internet banking, mobile banking apps, and ATMs function normally on public holidays — unless there's a specific maintenance notice or technical issue issued by the bank.
However, customers should keep in mind that some transactions, such as those involving cheques or promissory notes, are not processed on these days. These instruments fall under the Negotiable Instruments Act and are paused during bank holidays.
