Out of the 7.65 crore subscribers of Atal Pension Yojana, 48 percent are women. This information was given in the data released by the government. Atal Pension Yojana (APY) was launched in May 2015. Its objective was to give a good and reliable option of pension to the people of the unorganized sector of the country, so that they can live their life comfortably after retirement. Pension in APY depends on the age of joining the scheme and the amount of contribution. It was aimed primarily at the poor and deprived workers of the informal sector and has emerged as one of the most inclusive and accessible social security initiatives in India.
More than 7.65 crore subscribers joined by April 2025
The Department of Social Welfare said, "More than 7.65 crore subscribers have joined APY by April 2025, collecting a total amount of Rs 45,974.67 crore." The government department further said, "Women's participation in APY is increasing rapidly. Now the share of women in total subscribers has increased to 48 percent." More than 55 percent of the new subscribers added in FY 2024-25 were women. There has also been a strong increase in total enrollment during the same period.
Scheme available for age from 18 years to 40 years
The APY scheme was initially available to all Indian citizens between the ages of 18 and 40 years. From October 2022, persons paying income tax are not eligible to join this scheme. Under this scheme, subscribers are provided a fixed monthly pension (Rs 1,000, Rs 2,000, Rs 3,000, Rs 4,000 and Rs 5,000 per month) at the age of 60 years based on their contribution.
Great scheme of social security
The department said, "Atal Pension Yojana has emerged as the cornerstone of the social security ecosystem, especially for India's unorganised workforce. With around 7.65 crore subscribers and a steadily increasing pension amount, the scheme not only ensures financial independence for the elderly but also promotes long-term savings among low-income families."
