As part of the state’s continuous crackdown on anti-national activities, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Tuesday that 73 people who are reportedly acting as “Pakistani agents” have been detained so far.

“It is regrettable that some people enjoy every privilege India offers — salary, power, and position — but their loyalty lies across the border,” Sarma wrote on the social networking site X. Despite working only for Pakistan’s interests, they take inspiration from Bharat. This is treachery. Our effort to find and punish anti-nationals continues, just like #OperationSindoor.

As of 10:30 a.m. on May 20, the Chief Minister said that two further arrests had been made: “Faridul Islam was taken into custody by @chirangpolice. Sahabuddin Rain was apprehended by @Hojai_Police.

He said that with them, the operation’s overall number of arrests has increased to 73.

Sarma also praised the Assam Police’s efforts to track down and arrest those who are allegedly supporting anti-national activities.

The people who were detained reportedly posted pro-Pakistan and anti-India remarks on social media, especially during the tense period between India and Pakistan and after the Pahalgam terrorist incident in Jammu and Kashmir.

Even though they lived in India, the people were charged with aiding Pakistan and Assamese militants, which led to harsh punishment.

The Assam Police stepped up social media surveillance after the Chief Minister ordered that anybody living in India who supports Pakistan or terrorism be arrested.

In the early hours of May 7, the Indian Armed Forces, acting under Operation Sindoor, attacked nine terrorist hideouts in Pakistan’s deep interior and in Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

The attacks were carried out in reaction to the terror attack in Pahalgam; nevertheless, the Indian government swiftly terminated the 1960 Indus Water Treaty between the two nations after the CCS (Cabinet Committee on Security) meeting the day after the incident.
