As torrential rains continued to disrupt life in Bengaluru, BJP MP from Bengaluru Central, PC Mohan, urged IT companies to prioritise employee safety by declaring remote work. "All companies in Bengaluru, including Infosys, must declare two days of work from home due to rains," the MP posted on X (formerly Twitter).
BBMP On High Alert, Residents Advised Caution
With the city reeling from intense rainfall, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao conducted a virtual emergency meeting on Tuesday. He instructed all eight zonal commissioners to stay in close contact with Fire and Emergency Services and respond swiftly to public complaints.
“All zonal control rooms must promptly respond to complaints from the public. Officers should stay alert and act swiftly to resolve civic issues,” Rao stressed. A 'Yellow Alert' for heavy rain and strong winds remains in place from May 20 to May 22, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Water Levels Receding In Some Areas
In Mahadevapura, Zonal Commissioner Ramesh reported that water levels in flood-affected Sai Layout have receded by around 80 per cent, and the area is expected to be fully drained if there is no further rainfall. BBMP teams are working to clear roadside drains using one JCB, two tractors, two high-power pumps, and a team of 16 personnel. The civic body also confirmed that affected residents are being provided with three meals a day and access to clean drinking water.
Key Bottlenecks And Structural Damage
At Silk Board Junction in the South zone, drainage problems continue due to elevated water levels in stormwater drains and ongoing metro construction. Transport Minister and MLA Ramalinga Reddy, along with BBMP Chief Commissioner Rao, visited the site and directed immediate restoration efforts in coordination with BMRCL.
In KAS Officers Layout, plans are underway to construct a new drain, which requires land acquisition from private owners; meanwhile, a temporary water channel is being created under disaster management provisions.
