Udupi: Heavy rain causes artificial flooding in Manipal, traffic hit

Udupi: Heavy rain that lashed Udupi district since Tuesday morning triggered artificial flooding in several parts of Manipal, causing damage to shops and disrupting traffic on the national highway.

The Manipal-Indrali stretch was the worst affected, with flood-like scenes witnessed as water gushed down from Syndicate Circle towards Indrali, carrying along stones and mud. The flow created large potholes and deposited debris across the road, bringing traffic to a near halt. Only one side of the highway remained open for movement.

More than 10 shops on the downhill section of the Manipal-Udupi road were inundated with rainwater and slush, resulting in damage and losses to business owners. The lack of a proper drainage system near Syndicate Circle worsened the situation, with rainwater overflowing onto the road after a nearby apartment complex blocked an existing stormwater drain.

In several areas, the rainwater flowed through residential plots, with compound walls collapsing under pressure. In Lakshmindranagar and Kundelu near Sagar Nagar, stagnant water created flood-like conditions, posing a threat to homes located in low-lying areas. Locals blamed poor drainage planning and blockage of natural water channels due to rapid urban development for the situation.

A tree fell across a road near Lakshmindranagar, snapping power lines and damaging four electric poles. The road connecting Perampalli was also cut off temporarily.

Local MLA Yashpal Suvarna, along with town municipal members and engineers, visited the affected sites and ordered immediate clearance of drains using JCBs and trucks. He also directed officials to remove encroachments and ensure water flows freely.

In other areas such as near MIT Manipal, Saralebettu, and Eshwar Nagar, residents also reported waterlogging. In Santhekatte, highway construction work was delayed due to water accumulation on both sides of the road.
