Renowned Pakistani actress Saba Hameed recently remarked that modern dramas feel artificial, while older dramas were more original and impactful.
Saba Hameed made these comments during her appearance on PTV’s program Star & Stylewhere she openly discussed various topics to the entertainment industry. While speaking on the show, she said that acting in dramas during the 1980s had its own charm, as the dialogues written by writers of that era were truly engaging and powerful.
She fondly mentioned literary giants such as Amjad Islam Amjad, Noorul Huda Shah, Ashfaq Ahmed, and Bano Qudsia, saying that delivering dialogues written by them was a delightful experience.
Saba Hameed noted that back then, actors would do their own styling and prepare their get-up according to their roles, whereas now there is an entire team responsible for everything from clothing to makeup. They decide what look the actor will have on a particular day. She added that this is why older dramas felt more original and genuine, free from artificiality or pretentiousness.
In response to a question, the veteran actress expressed her preference for directing over acting. She said she enjoys direction more because it carries greater responsibility. According to Saba, a director is responsible for everything from the setup of the drama to casting, while an actor only focuses on their own role.
Talking about her favorite actress, Saba Hameed said that if she were to imitate someone’s acting, it would be Shahnaz Sheikh. She praised Shahnaz for her impeccable comic timing, saying no one in Pakistan matches her in that regard. With a smile, she admitted to being a huge admirer — even saying she is envious of her talent.
When asked about actor Naumaan Ijaz, she described him as a “gem of our industry,” molded and refined by time.
It is worth noting that Saba Hameed is considered one of the most senior and respected figures in the Pakistani showbiz industry, with a career spanning over 35 years.
Her notable dramas include Family Front, Mere humsafar, Thakan, Pyaray afzal, Ghissi mohabat pigeons, Dillagiand Laal Ishq.Recently, she received praise for her performances in dramas such as Sun apples dil, Noor Jahanand Ae dil. Additionally, she directed the highly acclaimed drama Jaisay aapki marziwhich was very well-received by audiences.
