
A 40-year-old plumber from Mumbra has been arrested and remanded to police custody until May 22 for allegedly assaulting a disabled woman in the handicapped coach of a Mumbai local train. The accused, identified as Mohammed Ismail Hasan Ali Beg, a resident of Namdev Bhoir Chawl, Santosh Nagar, Mumbra, was arrested on Tuesday and produced before the CSMT Railway Court on Wednesday.
"The incident took place on May 16. The victim and her colleague boarded the handicapped coach of a Titwala -bound down slow local train around 9:12 pm at Kanjurmarg station. A dispute reportedly broke out over seats. According to officials, the accused, along with his wife, verbally abused the victim and her colleague and physically assaulted the woman, allegedly behaving in a manner that outraged her modesty" said an GRP official.
The incident has sparked concerns over the safety of women and disabled passengers in the city's suburban railway network.
A video of the incident later went viral on social media, prompting public outrage and media coverage. Based on the footage and the victim’s formal complaint, an FIR was initially registered at the Kalyan Government Railway Police ( GRP) Station but was later transferred to the Kurla GRP, as the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Kurla GRP.
"The accused was arrested on Tuesday and brought before the CSMT Railway Court on Wednesday. The court granted police custody until May 22. The police have also issued a notice to the accused’s wife, Yasmeen Ismail Shaikh (35), who is reportedly pregnant, regarding her alleged involvement" further added official.
A case has already been registered against Mohammed Ismail Hasan Ali Beg under Sections 74 (intent to outrage modesty), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 351, and 352 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 92(a) and 92(b) (committing atrocities against persons with disabilities) of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act by the Government Railway Police.
Further investigation is being led by PSI Tanaji Bhandwalkar.
