Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu have once again raised anxiety. Chennai has emerged as the most affected city, where active cases have exceeded double in a week. According to the latest data of the Central Health Ministry, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Maharashtra are the most affected states in the country. This boom is seen not only in India but also in Asian cities like Hong Kong and Singapore. Cases increased rapidly in Chennai

Last week, Tamil Nadu recorded a shocking growth of 106% in Covid-19 cases. According to data from the Central Health Ministry, the state had 32 active cases on 12 May 2025, which increased to 66 by May 19. During this time 32 patients returned home after recovering, but the number of new cases alerted health experts. Chennai has the highest number of cases, where the spread of virus remains a matter of concern during the urban crowd and summer season. “This bounce of Respiratory Virus in summer is unusual and worrying in summer,” said a senior epidemiologist at King Institute of Preventive Medicine.

The situation in Kerala and Maharashtra is also serious

At the national level, Kerala is the most affected with 95 active cases, where 69 new cases were registered in a week. In Maharashtra, cases also increased from 12 to 56, and the news of two covid-positive Deaths has deepened anxiety. However, doctors clarified that these deaths were mainly due to diseases already existing. On the other hand, the cases in Puducherry decreased from 13 to 10, which is a matter of relief. The total number of active cases in India is 257, out of which 26% are in Tamil Nadu.

Activeness of health department

Tamil Nadu Health Department has taken quick steps to control the situation. Health Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan said, “We are keeping a special watch on urban centers like Chennai.” Genomic surveillance has been intensified to identify the potential new variant. Although no new variant has been revealed yet, the Health Department has advised to take booster dose from senior citizens and people with co-morbidities. Central Health Ministry has also appealed to re -adopt measures like masks and social distance.
