Amid the ongoing IPL 2025 season, Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli shocked fans by announcing his retirement from Test cricket. The announcement, made via social media on May 12, left the cricketing world stunned. Fans across the globe continue to urge Kohli to reconsider his decision.

Ben Stokes Reacts to Kohli's Exit

Reacting to the news, England's star all-rounder Ben Stokes expressed his disappointment. Speaking to England Cricket, Stokes said:

“I texted him saying it’s going to be a shame not playing against him this time. I love playing against Virat. We’ve always relished the contest because we share the same mindset on the field – it’s a battle,” said Stokes in a video released by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

“What India will miss is his fighting spirit on the field, his competitiveness, his desire to win. He’s made No. 18 his own – we might never see it on the back of another Indian shirt. He’s been pure class for such a long time,” Stokes said.

“One thing I’ll always remember about Virat is how hard he hits the ball through the covers – that cover drive will live long in the memory,” he added.

Kohli's retirement comes just before India's upcoming tour of England, where his presence would have been a major asset.

India is scheduled to play a five-match Test series in England starting June 20. With both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retiring from the longest format, India is expected to undergo a major transition.

According to reports, young opener Shubman Gill is likely to be appointed captain for the tour. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the squad soon. This series will run through August and is expected to be one of India's toughest overseas challenges in recent years.
