In a ground-breaking development for global healthcare, Saudi Arabia has opened the world’s first clinic where artificial intelligence (AI), rather than human doctors, serves as the primary point of patient diagnosis. The pilot programme, launched last month in Al-Ahsa in partnership with China-based Synyi AI and Almoosa Health Group, represents a major leap in medical technology. The clinic introduces an innovative system in which an AI “doctor” named Dr Hua conducts full-chain medical operations—from initial inquiry to diagnosis and treatment planning—while human doctors act as safety supervisors.
AI Doctor Dr Hua Begins Trials with 0.3% Error Rate, Targets 50 Diseases
Upon arrival, patients input their symptoms using a tablet. Dr Hua then follows up with specific questions and analyzes data and medical images gathered with the help of human assistants. Once the consultation is complete, the AI provides a treatment plan, which must be reviewed and approved by a licensed human doctor. Medical professionals are also on hand for emergencies and situations outside AI’s current scope.
At present, the AI system is limited to diagnosing around 30 respiratory conditions, including asthma and pharyngitis. However, Synyi AI plans to expand its capabilities to include 50 diseases across respiratory, gastrointestinal, and dermatological fields. During its testing phase, the AI doctor reportedly achieved a low error rate of just 0.3 percent. Full regulatory approval from Saudi authorities is expected within the next 18 months.
Synyi AI Launches Next-Gen Doctor Powered by Localized LLMs
Synyi AI, supported by major investors such as Tencent, Hongshan Capital, and GGV Capital, claims the AI uses localized large language models (LLMs) trained in region-specific medical terminology and cultural nuances. According to CEO Zhang Shaodian, “AI has long assisted doctors, but this marks the final step—allowing AI to independently diagnose and treat patients.” The initiative signals a transformative shift in global healthcare delivery, blending advanced technology with human oversight for safer, more efficient care.
